Home Is Where My Mom Is

"Strength and honor are her clothing;
she shall rejoice in time to come."
Proverbs 31:25

My mom and my daughter ~ June 2012

Your prayers for my mom to our great God have been ushering her and our family through this transitional season in my mom's life.  Her back surgery went exceptionally well and there seem to be no long-term side effects from anesthesia.  We are so grateful.

After spending three nights in the hospital after surgery, she was moved to a physical rehabilitation center where she will spend a few weeks working to strengthen her back and legs. Her room is decorated with pictures, posters and fresh flowers so she feels as comfortable as possible.

My siblings and our families have the last several months endeavoring to care for our sweet mom the best care we can in her home.  As she spends time in the hospital and the rehabilitation center, her heart's desire it to be home again. She wants us to all be together in her home.  And I keep saying to her:

"Home is where you are, Mom."

Our deep love for her and her unwavering, unconditional love for us truly makes her heart and her presence our home.

Where she is, we are loved unconditionally.

Where she is, we are being prayed for daily.

Where she is, we are welcomed with a smile and a long embrace.

Where she is, there is faith in our God to move a mountain.

Where she is, there is hope in our Savior.

Where she is, there are sparkling blue eyes looking back at us with joy.

Where she is, there is our home.

We love you, Mom.  Home is where you are.

Pray for My Sweet Mom~Our Kids' Nan Nan

"You will keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on You
because He trusts in You."
Isaiah 26:3

Our Mom, Eileen, at Anne's wedding on 6/23/12
(Me, PJ, Paul, Anne)

Please pray for my sweet mom, Eileen, who is having surgery on her back tomorrow morning.  This surgery itself is not unusually risky, but given other health concerns for my mom, we would cherish your prayers.  Please pray her surgery and recovery are easy, successful, uneventful and filled with His perfect peace, provision and healing.

Thank you so much.

"Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He
I am He who will sustain you.
I made you and I will carry you;
I will sustain you and I will rescue you."
Isaiah 46:4

Prayers for Mission Philly 2012

Joshua on June 23, 2012, at his
Aunt Anne's wedding.

"Since my youth, O God,
You have taught me..."
Psalm 71:17

Please pray for our son, Joshua, this week and a team of junior high students from our church serving in "Mission Philly". They will be reaching out to children of our inner city with the love of Christ.  Please pray for God's bountiful fruit through the hearts and hands of our youth.  May HIS Name be glorified and may many receive new life in Jesus.  And may the hearts and lives of our youth be changed forever by His Spirit and may they love and serve Him wholeheartedly every moment of their lives.

Jim's blessing over Joshua at Joshua's
6th grade graduation lunch ~ June 6, 2012
"Joshua, God did not give you athletic ability
to win games; He gave you athletic ability
to win hearts for Christ." ~ Jim Sloan

Jim will be serving alongside our Joshua today, tomorrow and Tuesday.  I am so thankful to the Lord for my husband who is dedicated to God and our family.  He has taken vacation days from work to serve the Lord with our son through Mission Philly.  A beautiful offering of Jim's time to things of eternal value...really, it doesn't get much better than that.  Thank You, Lord. I am deeply grateful to You.

"...serve Him shoulder to shoulder."
Zephaniah 3:9

My Nine Sentences ~ "Unglued"

"My heart is overflowing with a good theme;
I recite my composition concerning the King;
my tongue is the pen of a ready writer."
Psalm 45:1

A Tuesday evening last September, I sat in the middle of my kitchen floor quietly crying.  We had just received medical confirmation that my sweet mom's health was beginning to decline, I sensed the painful betrayal of someone I had once called friend, and I was feeling overwhelmed with the rigors of a new school year for our wonderful children.

There was nothing exceptional about what I was feeling really.  These are all things many of us face in life at one time or another.  And yet at that moment, when the coming together of many difficult things at once flooded over my heart with sadness, God met me.

The Exceptional One transformed those unglued moments into sanctified steps of growth.

Sweetly humbled by the Holy.

Precious moments with my Savior on my kitchen floor.

In my brokenness and through my unglued self, He met me with His perfect love.

"You are the God-Who-Sees-Me...
I have now seen the One who sees me."
Genesis 16:13

Often times in the most painful times of life, His presence is the greatest.  The cold kitchen tile became my sanctuary and my threshing floor that evening.  God met me with His grace and His truth.  I will always remember those kitchen floor moments that Tuesday evening last September.

The next morning after my quiet time with the Lord, I felt the Him whisper to my heart email Lysa and tell her what happened last evening.  Tell her how I met you on the kitchen floor.

Ah-hem...what?  Does Lysa really need to receive this email?  I had been part of a team praying for Lysa as she wrote her new book "Unglued", and I wanted to be sensitive about sending unnecessary emails.  Is this necessary, Lord?  Is this You?

The prompting did not go away, and so I obeyed.

A short time later, I received an email from Lysa that put me in jaw-dropping awe of God's goodness and faithfulness! I didn't know why He wanted me to send the email, but He made that clear.

Yes, yes, yes, my friend!  This is it!  Thank you for your honest unglued admission.  It makes us feel a little more normal when we know we are not alone.

Lysa asked me if she could include what I had shared in a chapter she had just written titled "Coming Unglued Isn't All Bad" and in a sub-section called "A Step Toward Holiness".

Nine sentences.  An act of obedience.  And a reminder that He redeems our unglued moments when our hearts are postured in humility before Him.

"In the ugliness of my unglued  self,
I realized the blessing of unglued...
if we let it, unglued will allow us to become
humbly and beautifully broken before Him."

"Unglued" ~ Giving Away 3 Signed Books!

"...do what is honorable..."
Romans 12:17

We have a gift for you!
OK, the bag is totally my gift...
and I am not sharing that...
but there are three books inside from Lysa
 to give away here at

Relationships and connections ~ two things on the top of my list of passions and priorities.  That's why I LOVE this newest book by my very gracious friend Lysa TerKeurst!  (The Lord brought Lysa and I together as friends several years ago, and she sweetly refers to me as a "good friend", though I think the "good" might have been challenged last week after I provided her daughters with off-limits "pyrotechnics" and after my husband broke into the TerKeurst cabin while we were on vacation...but those are stories for another day!  Just note that she did not become Unglued by either circumstance, rather she met them with grace and humor!)

Me and Lysa with "Unglued"

In this book, Lysa demonstrates how our relationship with God flows down into our relationships with family and friends and others.  In her sweet, southern, down-to-earth kind of way, Lysa unearths the treasures of being unglued and reminds us that imperfect progress is progress and growth nonetheless.

Unglued?  Perhaps at times.  But Philippians 1:6 promises us that God doesn't leave us unfinished.  There is hope!  His hope.

"And I am certain that God,
who began the good work within you,
will continue His work until it is finally finished
on the day when Christ Jesus returns."
Philippians 1:6

Imperfect progress.  Prepared godly responses to challenging situations ~ the fruit of our abiding in Him.  Godly integrity of our soul.  Steps toward holiness.  Peace.  Honor.

Unglued.

I underlined just about every sentence in this book. I don't say this often, but this is a must-read for women!  And my husband loves this book, too!  We think Unglued is for everyone!

Unglued will be released on August 7, 2012!!  BUT I HAVE THREE ADVANCED READING COPIES OF UNGLUED SIGNED BY LYSA HERSELF!!!!

Lysa sweetly gave me three signed copies of the "advanced reading copy" to give away to three of my readers!  This book is also great for a small group Bible study (you can order the DVD teachings by Lysa and the workbooks! CLICK HERE).

HOW TO ENTER TO WIN:  LEAVE A COMMENT AND PROMISE ME TWO THINGS:
If you can relate to feeling unglued at times...or if you have a difficult person in your life...or if you ever experience conflict in relationships...and if would like to enter to win a copy of Unglued, please leave a comment here with your name and email address.  You just have to promise me two things:
1.)  You will pray today for someone specifically who tends to be a difficult person in your life (please do not tell us who that person is!); and
2.)  You will ask the Lord to search your own heart to see if there are any offensive ways in you that He wants to change through His truth.

"Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.  If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all...overcome evil with good."
Romans 12:17, 21 (ESV)

"Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you..."
Matthew 5:44 (ESV)

"Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting."
Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

We may feel unglued, but we are not unfinished.  He who began a good work in us is faithful to complete it!

Check back on Friday when I announce the winners of Unglued!
