What If God Designed Marriage To Make Us Holy More Than To Make Us Happy?

"Sanctify them by Your truth; Your word is Truth."
John 17:17

"You had me at 'hello'." Do you remember that famous movie line from the movie "Jerry Maguire" starring Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger? Well, I feel the same way about the subtitle to the book "Sacred Marriage" by Gary Thomas: "What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than To Make Us Happy?" Just that subtitle grabs your heart and gets you thinking!

Beautiful Feet and Pedi-Prayers

I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.
1 Samuel 1:27

As the saying goes, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Well, in the case of foot massages, they are right! Momma Tree here loves foot massages, and her little Apples love foot massages, too.

One of my favorite ways my hubby blesses my heart to full is a long, relaxing foot massage. Ever since I was a child, I love when my feet get some tender loving care! Now as an adult, for special occasions, such as my birthday, Mother's Day and Christmas, all I want is simple gift certificate for a pedicure. I am content with that one gift for the special treat of a pedicure. Happy Feet, Happy Woman. Oh the simple pleasure of a pedicure or a fantastic foot massage.

Well, our cherubs LOVE their feet massaged, too! Last night, we had what the children call "The Foot Massage Train": we all rub one persons feet while someone else is rubbing ours. It was a great invention!

Often in the mornings, I rub their feet when I wake them up for school. In the evening when we are getting them nestled all snug in their beds, I massage their feet before they drift off to sleep. Though sometimes I am feeling rushed by the demands of the day in the morning or feeling exhausted from the day's demands in the evening and wanting to go to sleep myself, I have asked the Lord always give me His patience and joy as I take the treasured time to rub their feet.

One morning while I was in the Word, the Lord put on my heart to pray over our cherubs' precious feet as I massage them. I have kept a list of Pedi-Prayer verses. This might seem silly to some, but I pour my heart out in prayer to the Lord as I massage our cherubs' feet. Sometimes I pray out loud so the children know my mommy's heart prayers for them. Sometimes I pray silently to the Lord. He knows the deepest desires and groanings of my heart for our children. Here are some of my "Pedi-Prayer" verses:

Father God, bless our children and their children and may they follow you wholeheartedly.
"Caleb will see [the good land], and I will give him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the LORD wholeheartedly." (
Deuteronomy 1:36) "I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly. So on that day Moses swore to me, 'The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.'" (Joshua 14:8-9)

Dear God, guard the feet, heart, body and soul of our children.
He will guard the feet of His saints..." (1 Samuel 2:9)

Mighty God, give our children feet like deer and enable them to stand on the heights for You.
"He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to stand on the heights." (2 Samuel 22:34, Habakkuk 3:19 and Psalm 18:33)

Gracious God, keep our children on Your narrow road, hold their steps to Your paths, keep their feet from slipping, may Your Word be forever infused in their hearts, let their hearts never turn from You.
"My steps have held to Your paths; my feet have not slipped." (Psalm 17:5) " The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip." (Psalm 37:31) "Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from Your path.(Psalm 44:18)

Merciful God, arm our children with Your strength for life's battles. Let even their enemies bow at their feet because they honor You.
You armed me with strength for battle; You made my adversaries bow at my feet.
(Psalm 18:39)

Lord, may our children love and thirst for Your Word so they treasure Your Word and depend on it as a lamp to their feet and a light to their path.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." (Psalm 119:105)

Sweet Savior, please cause our children's feet to stand firm with feet fitted with readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
"Stand firm then...with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace." (Ephesians 6:14-15)

Abba Father, may our children have beautiful feet that bring good news of Your gospel, who proclaim Your peace, who bring Your good tidings, who proclaim Your salvation, whose hearts always say with joy and reverence "Our God Reigns!"
This is one of my favorites!! 'How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!"' (Isaiah 52:7)

Loving God, may our children always worship You deeply from the heart with humility, sincerity and passion, unaware of those around them, only totally surrendered to and centered on You. May they honor You by pouring out their best for you and serving You with excellence, by Your grace and strength.
This is my other favorite!! " she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them." (Luke 7:38)

This mommy's heart Pedi-Prayers for her children. My heart's cry. He hears me. "I have no greater joy than to know that my children walk in the Truth." (3 John 1:4) This is God's greatest joy with His children. It is a Christian parent's greatest joy for their children, too.

Share with me your prayers for your children. And if you have a favorite "feet verse", please feel free to share that!

'"I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And he worshiped the LORD there.'" 1 Samuel 1:27-28

Celebrating A New Blog Look!

"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland...[they] will honor Me because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to My people, My chosen, the people I formed for Myself that they may proclaim my praise." Isaiah 43:19-21

Once in a while, it is nice to change things up a bit. I am thankful for gals who can design blogs so nicely! What a gift they have! My new friend, Carol -- "The Design Diva" -- designed this new look for Joy In The Truth. I do hope you like it!

To celebrate the fresh, new look, I'd like to give a gift to one of you -- the daily devotional I am currently reading. It is awesome! Founded in God's Word, it gives daily encouragement and challenges to grow in the Lord. Already in January 2010, God has used the scriptures and writing in this devotional by the Blackaby Brothers to minister to my heart and to confirm ways He is instructing me to walk in obedience. This devotional is one of my new favorite gifts to give!

My daily quiet time with the Lord and in The Word is sacred to me. I protect that time. I need that time. I love that time. He gives me water to drink, and I desire to honor Him and proclaim His praise. Only by His grace.

Just leave a little comment. In a few days, I will let you know who is receiving the gift of "Experiencing God Day by Day Devotional" by Richard & Henry Blackaby. Thank you for visiting!

May I Speak With You Privately Please?

"Then he turned to His disciples and said privately, 'Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.'" Luke 10:23-24
"May I speak with you privately please?" That is what I say to our children when they need guidance, correction or discipline when we are in a social or public setting. Though I need to speak with them immediately, I don't want to humiliate them, so I ask to speak with them privately and then take them aside to speak with them one-on-one. "...he who loves his son disciplines him promptly." Proverbs 13:24
They are still learning, and we tell them frequently, that "we guide, correct and discipline you because we love you and we delight in you." "For whom the LORD loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights." Proverbs 3:12 They may not get this completely yet, but as we tell them this loving truth over and over, we pray it sinks deep into their hearts and minds.
The Lord desires to speak with us privately every single day. As we make that time to meet with Him, He speaks privately to us through His Word, through prayer and through our quiet, attentive, yearning hearts.
His private words to me are always rooted in love and for my growth in Him. Sometimes the words are so sweet to my taste, like when He says something like He said to His disciplines in Luke 10: "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see..." Sometimes His words to me are bittersweet, convicting and challenging, during which times I ask for willingness, wisdom and humility to remain in His presence so I can receive a life-giving rebuke and gain understanding. "He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding. The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor." Proverbs 15:31-33
His private words are precious because they are about our relationship. He is my Savior, my Redeemer, my Lord, my Brother and my Friend. It's all about love. "I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her." Hosea 2:14
"When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?'” John 21:15 "Jesus has a wonderful way of restoring us when we fail Him. He takes us aside and asks us to reaffirm our love for Him. Peter must have wondered if he was capable of being Jesus' disciple when he was unfaithful to Jesus in His crucial hour. Perhaps you have been unfaithful. Jesus will take you aide, as He did Peter. He will not berate you. He will not humiliate you. He will ask you to examine your love for Him. Jesus asks for your love. If your answer, like Peter's, is 'Yes, Lord,' He will reaffirm His will for you. If you truly love Him, you will obey Him." - Blackaby ("Experiencing God Day by Day" Devotional)
When I ask to speak to my children privately, it's all about love and obedience. When the Lord speaks with me privately, it's all about love and obedience. "If you love Me, you will obey what I command." John 14:15
Jesus whispers to my heart every morning, "May I speak with you privately please?" By His grace, I want to yield and surrender my heart to Him every morning and every moment. Only by His grace, humility and strength.
He wants to speak privately to you, too. Quiet your heart and mind before Him. He whispers words of love for you.
"The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing."
Zephaniah 3:17
"Jesus withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place."
Matthew 14:13

"I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought."
1 Corinthians 1:10
Happy New Year 2010! Today is 1-1-10.
I am asking the Lord to reveal that verse to me for 2010 during my morning quiet times with Him. While I don't think He has impressed my 2010 scripture on my heart yet, I love what His Word says in 1 Corinthians 1:10. God wants the Body of Christ to be perfectly united in mind and thoughts so that there are no divisions among us. This can only be done as we all yield our hearts to the Holy Spirit and as we live in obedience to the Lordship of Christ.
This is a bountiful nugget of truth to savor and digest: In His divisions...perfectly united in mind and thought. I am asking the Lord to let my heart soak this in so my life can live it out. I am asking Him to keep my heart humbly yielded to Him as Lord so that I do not contribute to divisions in His Body. Even if someone is busy picking at me and causing division, I am asking Him for His perfect love to fill me so He can use me as a vessel of restoration. I am asking for His grace, mercy and healing to cover me when, sadly, I do contribute to divisions. "For the grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly..." 1 Timothy 1:14
And I am asking Him for the gracious love of my family and friends so they can show this kind of mercy toward me in our relationships, that we can live out this 1-1:10 command together. I can be disagreeable and bristly. I can be stubborn and selfish. I can be grumpy. I can be ugly. I am so thankful for family and friends who allow me to grow in grace and to grow up in Christ! I need to grow up into Him. "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, that is, Christ." Ephesian 4:15
For 2010, I am going to pray God transforms my heart according to 1 Corinthians 1:10. My heart's desire is to build bridges, not walls. Unity, not division. Only by His grace.
"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever! Amen."
2 Peter 3:18
